Mestská tržnice s 52 prodejními boxy, postavená na míste starého domu, zboreného v roce 1890, byla slavnostne otevrena 1. srpna 1891. Zajímavé a zcela neobvyklé byly okolnosti kolem vzniku projektu. Brnenským radním se tak zalíbily dve stejné stavby tržnic v chorvatské Rijece, že požádali tamní radnici o plány. Podle nich pak nechali o deset let pozdeji, tedy v letech 1890–1891, postavit naprosto vernou kopii. Autorem projektu byl vedoucí mestské technické kanceláre v Rijece Ing. Igor Vauchnig.
Prízemní objekt se skládá ze trí celku, dvou kratších prucelních front, které jsou postaveny z omítaných cihel a svírají strední trakt. Ten byl navržen kontrastne - masivní vyzdený sokl nese subtilní kovovou prosklenou konstrukci. Spojení "vysoké" architektury, reprezentované tady historizující vstupní cástí, která pripomene vítezný oblouk, s "inženýrským" stavitelstvím nebylo tehdy neobvyklé - užívalo se ho práve pri stavbách tržnic a výstavních pavilonu. Po stranách vstupu jsou umísteny reliéfní obrazce v plastických rámech, v nichž bohatý štukový dekor s motivy ovoce a zeleniny odkazuje na podobné rokokové hrícky. Pokusem o sjednocení takové stylové roztríštenosti je nekolikanásobné užití trojclenného systému, který se objevuje v základním rozvržení hmot, v rešení vstupní cásti nebo v podobe trojdílných oken o 12 polích.
Tržnice svému úcelu sloužila jen krátce, už v roce 1898 byla adaptována na telocvicnu nemeckého Turnvereinu, v roce 1912 prestavena znovu na tržnici, v roce 1926 opet prestavena na kinosál s 502 místy. Kino poté v prubehu let zaznamenalo radu stavebních úprav doprovázející snížení ci zvýšení poctu míst. Zajímavostí je, že od 11.10.1957 se stalo prvním kinem v Brne se širokoúhlým promítáním. V roce 1989 došlo k ukoncení cinnosti kina v budove. Následne zde nejakou dobu pusobila tanecní škola Starlet, poté byl objekt rekonstruován a vzniklo zde sportovište pro squash a bowling. V roce 2014 byl provoz Squash Radost ukoncen a budova je nyní v nabídkách realitních kancelárí. Její další využití je tak ve hvezdách.

Po stranách vstupu (celní stena z Cejlu) jsou v textu zmínené reliéfní obrazce v plastických rámech s bohatým štukovým dekorem s motivy ovoce a zeleniny. Otázkou je, kolikrát je tam kukurice neboli turkyn. Strana je myšlena pri pohledu na celní stenu od kolejí.
