The Capitol Theater opened December 10, 1928. It was the first to show motion pictures in Rome; Its 1,788 were seldom empty when new pictures would play.

The theater remained open until 1974, when declining patronage and skyrocketing costs associated with upkeep forced its closure. The last movie shown was "The Exorcist".

Another movie house chain bought the theater, but never ran movies, merely keeping the property "available" until 1989.

In 1985 live theater made its long-anticipated debut on December 10, the 57th anniversary of the Grand Opening.

The organ was restored to working order in 2003.

Today, over 100 performances yearly, both live and screened, are conducted at the Capitol.

The Capitol is located at 220 West Dominick Street in downtown Rome.
