The Leeds Liverpool canal is the longest canal in Northern England.

The canal is 127.25 miles long and flows from the inland woollen town of Leeds to the coastal sea port of Liverpool, crossing the Pennines along the way. Work on the canal started in 1770 and built in a number of sections and was finally completed in 1816.
The bridge is also known as New Hall Street Bridge and is a Historic England Grade II
listed building
with the following description. "Road bridge over Leeds-Liverpool Canal. c1790-96; engineer, Robert Whitworth. Coursed squared sandstone. Semi-elliptical arch with rusticated voussoirs, plain band, and parapets with ridged coping; concave curved abutments with rectangular terminal piers; humped deck with remains of sandstone paving."
The parapet on one side of the bridge is currently under repair.
