Arch Bridge 131 On The Leeds Liverpool Canal – Burnley, UK - Stone Bridges on Waymarking.com

The canal is 127.25 miles long and flows from the inland woollen town of Leeds to the coastal sea port of Liverpool, crossing the Pennines along the way. Work on the canal started in 1770 and built in a number of sections and was finally completed in 1816.

The bridge is also known as Colne Bridge and is a Historic England Grade II listed building with the following description. "Public road bridge over Leeds-Liverpool Canal. c1790-6; engineer, Robert Whitworth; widened c1862-71. Coursed squared sandstone. Semi-elliptical arch with rusticated voussoirs, a plain band, and parapet with ridged coping. Originally approximately 8m wide, but widened to approximately 12m by addition on the east side in matching style (the upper part of this addition now covered by a footway)."
