The canal is 127.25 miles long and flows from the inland woollen town of Leeds to the coastal sea port of Liverpool, crossing the Pennines along the way. Work on the canal started in 1770 and built in a number of sections and was finally completed in 1816.

The bridge is also known as Manchester Road Bridge and is a Historic England Grade II listed building with the following description. "Public road bridge over Leeds-Liverpool Canal. c1796, widened in mid C19. Coursed squared sandstone. Semi-elliptical arch with rusticated voussoirs, plain band, parapet with flat coping (that on south-east side replaced by cast-iron footway); oval number plate on north-west side. Soffit has 2 lateral joints, the central section between them roofed with cast-iron plates. Forms important element of group at this site, with No.85 (Wharfmaster's House) adjoining north-west corner (qv) and with 3 warehouses beyond this (qv)."
