The canal is 127.25 miles long and flows from the inland woollen town of Leeds to the coastal sea port of Liverpool, crossing the Pennines along the way. Work on the canal started in 1770 and built in a number of sections and was finally completed in 1816.

The bridge is also known as Sandygate Bridge and is a Historic England Grade II listed building with the following description. "Public road bridge over Leeds-Liverpool canal. c1796-1802. For the Leeds-Liverpool Canal Company; engineer Samuel Fletcher. Coursed squared sandstone. Semi-elliptical arch with rusticated voussoirs, plain band, rectangular terminals, coped parapets and concave curved abutments. Oval number plate on south side "130" (large cast-iron pipe crosses north side). Forms group with former Clock Tower Mill adjoining south-east corner (qv). "
