In Augusta, near the Maine State Capitol, is this memorial to fallen police officers in Maine.
The memorial is on the west side of State Street and just south of the driveway to the parking lot. It is located within 30 ft of the road and is visible from the road.
The memorial is a small plaza with both a bronze form and granite forms.
The main bronze sculpture is a large reproduction of the Maine State Seal. This is sitting on a granite base with the title "Law Enforcement Officers Memorial."
On the side is the following text:
"May 1991
Dedicated in memory of those who gave the supreme sacrifice, whose courage knows no bounds greater than that, that a man shall give his life in the service of his community.
To serve mankind to safeguard lives and property to protect the innocent against deception the weak against oppression or intimidation, and the peaceful against violence or disorder, and to respect the constitutional rights of all men to liberty equality and justice."
Behind the monument are more granite forms that have engravings of officers down. According to one source there have been 83 officers who have died in the line of duty. Each name has an engraving of the badge design of the police unit served, the name, date the officer went down, and the police unit served.
