In 1823 founded the Melsunger citizens "Abendgesellschaft"
for the maintenance of sociability and to enliven the cultural life of the city. (This association still exists today as a casino company, and is the oldest club in the city.)
Unfortunately no suitable premises, and so the "Casino" was finished in 1838. After a few half-hearted renovations it was decided in 1977/78 to a complete renovation of the building, but without changing its classical character.
The Stadthalle today offers a large and two smaller halls
for meetings, education, events, and a restaurant.
