Woolwich Town Hall is the seat of Greenwich local government, but this magnificent listed building also reflects the borough’s long and rich history.

The Town Hall is located on Wellington Street, Woolwich.

Building began on the town hall on 11 February 1903. The building was formally opened on 13 January 1906 by Will Crooks MP. Descendents of Will Crooks attended a special centenary celebration of Woolwich Town Hall in January 2006.

Victoria Hall

Inside the Wellington Street entrance is a beautiful ornate hall, the Victoria Hall.

For many years, this has been the place where mayors have greeted guests at ceremonial functions. The Victoria Hall is also used for exhibitions and counting votes at elections.

On either side of the main staircase, there are memorials dedicated to Civil Defence volunteers and council staff members who lost their lives during WWII.

There are fine examples of stained glass windows by Geoffrey Webb in the Victoria Hall. These windows show some of the borough’s eminent residents and notable events, such as Charles I visiting Woolwich to see his great ship The Sovereign of the Seas in 1637.

100 years on

The Town Hall was blessed by the Bishop of Woolwich during the building’s centenary in January 2006. The blessing marked the anniversary of the first blessing of the Town Hall in 1906, which was performed by the Bishop of Woolwich of that time.
