The Confederate cemetery is located near the Tad Smith Coliseum on the on the campus of the University of Mississippi. The cemetery is the final resting place for more than 700 Confederate dead, mostly from the Battle of Shiloh. Many of the University buildings were used as hospitals and headquarters of both Union and Confederate forces between 1862 and 1865. All those buried here died on the grounds of the University. The names of those known to be buried here are etched on this monument, which stands at the center of the Cemetery. The majority of those buried here are unknown. All of the individual markers have been destroyed and this monument, which is inscribed with the names of some of the dead is the only stone in the cemetery. Union dead were once buried here as well, but those remains were long ago moved to various National Cemeteries.
