The 3294' Big Savage Tunnel was built in 1911 by the Western Maryland Railway on their line from Cumberland Md. to Connellsville Pa. Primarily a coal hauling railway it was abandoned in 1975.
In 2003 the tunnel was restored at a cost of 12 million dollars financed by Government and private donations and is now part of the Allegheny Highlands Trail running from Cumberland Md. To Mckeesport Pa.
The tunnel is 6.5 miles from Frostburg Md. Be advised that after a short, steep hill at the beginning, the trail is an average 1.5 percent uphill grade to the tunnel. It is a fairly easy ride up and downhill coming back.
