Originally called the "Rome Post" when established in 1919. The Post name was changed to "Henry P. Smith", a Corporal in the US Army who was the first Roman killed in the Great War. The Post has boasted several addresses over the years. It moved into its current location in 1971.

The Post boasts a preserved M3A1 Stuart Light Tank. It is on display at the front of the building.

The Post also owns the B52G "Mohawk Valley" on permanent display at the former Griffiss AFB just NE of Rome.
