George Wythe's "A History of the 90th Division" lists him among the casualties, indicating that he was with Co. H, 359th Infantry. There are a few Internet references to his being a casualty, but nothing corroborative as to the details. One
account, from Brad Blauser, even suggests "friendly fire:"
One of my mother's uncles was Carroll Attaway, born in 1888. She never met him, as he was killed at the age of 30 in France in 1918 during World War I before she was born. Family history accounts say his platoon was advancing in battle up a hill. He didn't hear the call to retreat issued by his commander as he was deaf in one ear and the battle was noisy. His commanding officer shot and killed him to keep from giving away their position to the Germans.
