The sign is located in a small parkette on US-14. It is on north side of the road and on the eastern side of the town. There is a small gravel area available to allow visitors to safely pull off the highway.
The sign shows a painting of a young Laura Ingalls with her parents Caroline and Charles Ingalls. They appear to be standing in front of a covered wagon.
Laura Ingalls was born in 1867 in the Big Woods region of Wisconsin. She and her family moved to a property located on the banks of Plum Creek just north of Walnut Grove when she was 7 years old. As an adult, Laura Ingalls Wilder went on to author many books, arguably the most famous one being those of the 'Little House' series. The books are based roughly on Laura's actual childhood. The fourth book in the series, 'On The Banks of Plum Creek', depicts her life during the time when the Ingalls lived in Plum Creek, MN. Although this was only one of several places depicted in the 'Little House' series of books, the town was made more famous by the 'Little House on the Prairie' television series which set the family in a fictional Walnut Grove, complete with a Plum Creek running through it.
