Between Topsham and Brunswick and over the Androscoggin River and U.S. Route 1 is this railroad bridge known as the Black Bridge.

The bridge is located at a bend in the river and about 3/4 mile down U.S. Route 1 from downtown Brunswick. There is a tiny parking lot by the wire bridge on the northbound side of Route 1. If you can get to the other side, this may be a better place to park and walk around. I crossed the wire bridge and walked west to the bridge.

The Black Bridge is an iron truss bridge on concrete and stone piers. There is evidence that there was more to the piers - there are rough patches where something appears have been broken off. There also was a chain link fence at the base of the bridge. On the Topsham side, the bridge also has a short section over a driveway to a single house on the west side. The bridge has two trusses spanning over the river.

Bridgehunter.com has the following about this bridge:

Built: 1909 (Rehabilitated in 1987)
Builder: Pennsylvania Steel Company, Steelton, PA
Railroad: Pan Am Railways (the others listed are all under the same company)
Type: Baltimore Truss over the river, girder bridge over U.S. Route 1.
Span: 318 ft.

At one time it had a road deck, but it has since been removed.

The railroad is a minor branch of Pan Am Railway (old Maine Central)
Bridge Type: Truss

Bridge Usage: Railroad

Moving Bridge: This bridge is static (has no moving pieces)
