In front of the
Torfhaus Visitors Center of Harz National Park stands a 20 feet tall wooden carving, featuring the most prominent protected species of the park.
The artist managed to show creatures coming from six different biological classes of the animal and plant kingdoms. Mammal (Northern Lynx), Fish (Brown Trout), Bird (Pygmy Owl), Amphibian (Fire Salamander) and Insect (Dragonfly) share the environment of the Harz Mountains. Plant life is represented by Giant Firns, unrolling young fronds.
The sculpture was designed by local artist Kerstin Müller and sculpted by employees of local company SIK-Holz®. It was dedicated on August 15, 2013.
There are other, smaller sculptures of firn around the visitor's center, but this is the main one.
