This Lewes Borough Council plaque is attached to the rear of the Dirset Arms in Malling Street in Lewes. Tucked away in a corner it appears as though the pub or the council or both are ashamed of its heritage.

The plaque reads:

The Dorset Arms circa 1670

Alias the Cats, because leopards
support the escutcheon of the
Dukes of Dorset, Manorial Lords
of Cliffe. First recorded as the
Cats in 1670, and a public house
ever since.
