On Gary Alsum's website, this sculpture is shown as a commissioned piece to the city of San Jose, California and was titled "Saluting a Hero". In honor of Edmond's new Public Safety Center, the piece purchased by Edmond has been renamed "Edmond's Finest, Edmond's Future." A bronze plaque reads: "Edmond's Finest, Edmond's Future / Gary Alsum / Dedicated to the men and women of the Edmond Police Department, 911 Dispatch and Emergency Management / Purchased through Edmond Art in Public Places Fund / Public Safety Center Project / 2015".
It depicts a police officer and a young girl of about eight, sitting on a bench. The officer in uniform is holding onto the child's ball cap, and his police hat is proudly being worn by the child. It is a wonderful tribute to the 120 men and women of Edmond's Police Department and follows the sculptor's theme as he describes the purpose of his works: "The central theme of my work is celebrating the gift of life and my sculptures are successful if they heighten the viewer’s awareness of how precious is that gift."
