The facade of the arch was built in 1812 by Italian architect Xavier Fabri for Bishop Dom Francisco Gomes do Avelar.
It was built on top of an earlier Moorish entrance in the walls, which can still be seen in the middle of the arch.
The clock has a grey face with black hands and Roman numerals. Each of the numerals are separated by a white line radiating from a circle in the middle of the clock.
It is on a pediment at the top of the arch which has been painted white. On top of the clock is a single bell.
