This mural is on the front wall of a supermarket in the small, yet beautiful old rural town of Tocumwal (pronounced Toe, come, wal), right on the banks of one of Australia's most well known rivers, the Murray River, which is the state boundary for New South Wales and Victoria.
The mural depicts early life in the Australian pioneering days. 1. Relaxing on the bank of the Murray River. 2. A pioneer or swagman having a mug of 'billy' tea with his 'old faithful' (dog) in rural Australia. 3. A lady and child heading back to the homestead, or heading off to the town store. 4. Storekeepers on the verandah of the Hillson's building, a young 'lad' (boy) has arrived with the horse and sulky (wagon) to collect some supplies from the store.
I think the mural displays Tocumwal's old style, old way of living, with a contemporary way of living. Tocumwal says of itself as 'it's gourmet country, it's gourmet nature, it's gourmet family, it's gourmet relaxing, it's gourmet fun' taking a contemporary way of life and mixing it with old buildings, and so uses the mural as a representative mixing old and new.
