December 18, 1869 in the village of Stockton, PA, at approximately 5:00 in the morning, a coal mine caved in, filling the shaft and tunnel with enormous amounts of earth, and carrying two large houses with it. There were several people in the dwelling houses at the time of the accident and were carried down in the falling mass. It was reported that some men were in the mine at the time, all were supposed to be killed instantly. The houses fell a distance of forty feet and were broken into fragments. Ten persons in all lost their lives. The cause of the accident was determined to be digging the mine too close to the surface.
