The following obituary is from The Florida Times-Union:

"COOPER Edith - Singleton Cooper, a native and lifetime resident of Mayport, passed away on July 10, 2004 in Jacksonville at 102 years of age. She was born in Mayport on January 16, 1902, the seventh of thirteen children of Captain Samuel Singleton and Helen Mae Tillotson Singleton. Mrs. Cooper was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 73 years, James Martin Cooper, Sr.; daughters Helen Mae Floyd and Susan Clementine Parker; soninlaw, Hilton Floyd; eight brothers, Samuel T. Singleton, Robert E. Singleton, Chauncey J. Singleton, Holbrook E. Singleton, Raymond V. Singleton, Leroy W. Singleton, James L. Singleton and Earl T. Singleton; two sisters, Viola Singleton King Boley, Jeanette Singleton Wylie Cason; and two grandsons, William R. Parker, Jr., and Charles R. Cooper. She is survived by one sister, Ada Singleton Wylie of Quincy; two sons and daughtersinlaw, James Martin Cooper (Asia) and Millard Allen Cooper (Barbara) all of Mayport; 15 grandchildren, 38 greatgrandchild ren and 22 greatgreatgrandchildren. Mrs. Cooper was a communicant of Mayport Presbyterian Church, having joined the congregation in 1911. She was a longtime member of the women's circle of the church and for many years provided flowers for the sanctuary from her garden. She was a member of the first Girl Scout Troop in Florida, The Cherokee Rose Troop #1. During World War I the Girl Scouts and their leader, Elizabeth Starke, patrolled Seminole Beach on horseback, looking for German submarines along the coast. Mrs. Cooper was active in all aspects of community life in Mayport, and was best known and admired for her abundant flower and vegetable gardens, the fruits of which she shared with many. She was a treasured friend and role model to many, and after 102 years, our Mama, Grandmama, Aunt Edie, Ma Edie, Mrs. Cooper will be sadly missed."
