In 2006 Germany started the commemorative 2 Euro coin series "Die 16 Bundesländer der Bundesrepublik Deutschland" (The 16 States of the Federal Republic of Germany), which are respectively dedicated to the State, which holds the Presidency of the Bundesrat in the Release Year. The coins of the series shows a known structure of the specific state. The coin of the Year 2015 depicts the Paulskirche (St. Paul’s Church) in Frankfurt am Main, representing the state of Hesse.

The Paulskirche was built in 1789 - 1833 and served until 1944 as the main Protestant church in Frankfurt. In the neoclassical rotunda of the architect Johann Friedrich Christian Hess met from 1848 to 1849 the delegates of the Frankfurt Parliament, Germany’s first freely elected legislative body.
