I came across thus unusual homemade grave while touring Mountain Cemetery. The grave is made of gas pipe painted gray. There's a small plaque at the foot of the grave that reads:

TO THE MEMORY OF
JAMES DIXON
BORN JULY 6, 1887
DIED AUGUST 30 1930
FROM
P.G.E. GAS CONST GANG

I might surmise that James Dixon passed away without family nearby so his coworkers took it upon themselves to make a grave fitting for his profession.

Apparantly, the Mountain Cemetery Volunteer Association also thought this grave as significant because they included it in their walking tour guide which can be downloaded here.
