Austin Hall was originally Austin College. Austin College moved to Sherman, TX and in 1879 the building was purchased and opened as Sam Houston Normal Institute making it the first teacher-training school in the southwestern United States. The college continued to grow and in 1923 the name was changed to Sam Houston State Teachers College. The campus expanded with residence halls and instructional facilities, and by 1964 the enrollment exceeded 5,000. In 1965 Sam Houston State Teachers College was renamed Sam Houston State College and in 1969 the school became Sam Houston State University.

Dan Rather, who was a CBS Evening News Reporter for 46 years, got his bachelor's degree in journalism here. He was editor of the school newspaper, The Houstonian. At Sam Houston, he was a member of the Caballeros – the founding organization of the currently active Epsilon Psi chapter of the Sigma Chi fraternity. He spent one semester as a journalism instructor there before joining the U.S. Marines. In 1994, Rather was honored by his alma mater, which named its journalism and communications building after him.
