The cathedral was destroyed by an earthquake in 1755 and apart from the tower most of the cathedral was built after that time.

There is a small entrance fee of 3 Euros to enter the cathedral, after which everything is free to visit.

An information leaflet obtained from the entrance only states that there is a bones chapel in the grounds next to another chapel dedicated to St. Michael.

It is not possible to enter the bones chapel itself, only to view it. The walls are made of brick with skulls and bones inlaid into the walls. Most, if not all, of the skulls have been damaged.

The cathedral is dedicated to St. Mary and the chapel has a niche on the outside with a female statue which may be be St. Mary.

Old gravestones are lying on the ground next to the entrances to the two chapels, presumably the remnants of the original graves from where the bones were removed.
