G. Beavan Funerals has a beautiful horse-drawn hearse that creates enormous interest wherever it goes. This unique hearse was originally crafted in the 1820s by GB Huiskamp of Winterswijk, Holland. Found in a dilapidated condition in a barn in the western district of Victoria, it was purchased by G. Beavan and painstakingly restored by a coach builder in Castlemaine who identified the timber as Baltic Pine and the Wes of English origin.
The hearse is a Zijlader or side loading model and its regarded as the finest restored model of its kind in Australia.
Although normally on static display, it is still used on funerals if requested.
It makes regular appearances in parades and shows and has received numerous awards.
Oliver Geoff Beavan followed in his father's footsteps in continuing the Beavan family business.
For many years he was a funeral director, continuing the business started long before by his father John Beavan and still conducted under Geoff's name, although his formal association with it ended in 1962.
G Beavan Funerals was a long time family business and is now operated by Allison Monkhouse Funerals in Melbourne, Victoria.
