This part of the canal was built in 1816 to connect Aspull with Wigan, and the pub stands at the top of a flight of 21 locks on this stretch of canal.

The pub's website has the following information. "Kirkless Hall Inn is on the bank of the canal and is popular in summer due to its location. Having been fully refurbished the pub internally comprises of a lounge, bar and dining area, whilst outside there is a smoking area and large car-park. A welcome refreshment stop if you have just completed the 200 foot ascent and 21 locks of the Wigan Flight of the Leeds-Liverpool canal by either foot, bike or barge."
