Large laser-etched granite mural depicting the history of Canada's military actions from the Northwest Rebellion of 1885 up to Canada's contributions in Afghanistan and Southwest Asia in 2002.
The dedication marker indicates it is the intent to show the history of Canadian veterans duty, honour, heroism and sacrifice in war and peace, throughout the ages.
The markers, although weather-damaged, are still readable.
The main one reads:
HONOUR VALOUR DUTY SACRIFICE
Ontario has played a proud role in Canada's military history.
The People of Upper Canada, including Loyalists and Aboriginal Peoples, helped to repel invasion in the War of 1812.
The Fenian Raids, held off by the Militia, played a major role in moving British North America to Confederation, and Ontario soldiers fought to extend Canada's control in the West. They served with distinction in the South African Wars and then in the Great War. In that terrible conflict, Ontarians distinguished themselves in the air and at sea, and in France, Flanders the Canadian Corps became an elite formation.
In the Second World War Canadian servicemen and women again played an extraordinary role. Convoys of freighters, many manned by the Canadian Merchant Navy, battled against U-boats in the North Atlantic, as the Navy's corvettes battled to protect them and their precious cargoes. The Air Force served in every theatre and played a major role in the bombing campaign, and in tactical support of the armies. And Canadaès soldiers, after serious defeats at Hong Kong and Dieppe, fought their way through Italy and Northwest Europe to victory.
For the rest of the 20th century and into the 21st, Canadians stood guard against aggression and for peace. In NATO and NORAD, in the Korean War, and in dozens of peace support missions for the United Nations and other organizations, Canada's military did its part in every corner of the world, from Germany to Egypt and from Bosnia to Afghanistan, the Canadian Forces were there.
Regulars and Reservists, Ontario's men and women have served with pride. They brought great honour to all Canadians. They continue to do so.
The mural was dedicated 17 September, 2006.
