In Portland, north of downtown Portland, is the University of Southern Maine, Portland Campus.
The campus is located off Bedford Street, between U.S. Route 1 and Maine Route 25. There is an entrance off Bedford Street.
The University of Southern Maine at Portland is a tightly arranged urban campus with several multi=story buildings. Some of the buildings on campus:
- Science Building and Science Building C Wing - Is the site of several science and medical disciplines and is the home of the Southworth Planetarium.
-Luther Bonney Hall - Where the School of Business and the computer labs are located.
- Maine School of Law - One west end of the campus.
- Payson Smith Hall - Various offices.
- Sullivan Complex - sports and gym.

"The main part of the campus consists entirely of non-residential buildings. Many department offices are located around the perimeter of the campus center in converted multi-story homes as well as in the major buildings. The primary academic areas of the Portland campus are business, nursing, history, political science, economics, sociology, biology, physics, chemistry, math, English, psychology, media studies, modern and classical languages and literatures, American and New England studies.[52] The Albert Brenner Glickman Family Library is the main library on the Portland Campus."
University of Southern Maine started in Gorham in 1878. Portland University started after World War I near Monument Square. In 1970, the two institutions merged to form the University of Soutthern Maine. In 1988, Lewiston-Auburn College was founded, which is now part of USM.
Wikipedia reported starting in 2014 the university was in a financial crisis in 2014. Some programs have lost accreditation, as well.
