The name "Watermelon Thump" comes from the method used to test a watermelon's ripeness. This is a harvest festival. A queen is crowned each year and there is a parade and other activities. There is a contest for the biggest watermelon. A record was set in 1962 of an 80 lb melon. The water tower painted with green with stripes rises 154 feet over the town.
