The canal is 127.25 miles long and flows from the inland woollen town of Leeds to the coastal sea port of Liverpool, crossing the Pennines along the way. Work on the canal started in 1770 and built in a number of sections and was finally completed in 1816.

The bridge also known as Moss Bridge is a Grade II Listed building with the following description. "Public road bridge over Leeds-Liverpool Canal. Probably c.1771. Resident engineer John Longbotham. For the Leeds-Liverpool Canal Company. Coursed squared sandstone. Semi-elliptical arch with plain voussoirs and keystone; plain band; parapet repaired with concrete; plain pilaster terminals. Oval number plates "35" on both sides. Part of one of the earliest trunk canals in the country. "
