This interesting tombstone was made by etching into local sandstone with a drill. As hard as it is to read, Blasterz bet it was also pretty hard to carve.

We dug around a while on ancestry.com, and first found his death certificate, which listed his name as Lloyd S. Hyre, b 11 Nov 1864, a resident of Sweetwater for 37 years, died on 12 Feb 1945 of a cerebral hemhorrage due to arteriosclerosis and coronary occlusion. He was a retired brick contractor, who had been widowed. Informant is Mrs. M. E. Mitchell.

We found him living in Sweetwater in the 1940 US census. Lloyd owns the home and is renting it to William Hair (misspelled), who lived in the same house with his wife and daughter. William Hyre could be a son or grandson.

In the 1930 census we found Lloyd Hyer living in Sweetwater with his wife Charlotte and three unrelated lodgers, one a beauty parlor operator, another a school teacher, and the third a waitress in a cafe. Lloyd is working as a brick contractor.

In 1920 we found Lloyd Hyer (misspelled) a few counties to the east in Mineral Wells Texas, with his wife Charlotte L and daughter Elnora (age 19). Lloyd is working as a brickwork contractor on his own account. Elnora is in training to be a nurse. Lloyd and his wife Charlotte were both born in WV, their parents also were born in WV. Elnora was born in OK, her parents are born in WV.

With that we know we have the right guy, so we use the 1920 census to find Charlotte Hyre's death certificate. She was born on 20 Sep 1865 in WV, her spouse is L.S. Hyer. She died on 4 Sep 1938 of senility, chronic myocarditis and colon cancer. Mrs. M. E. Mitchell is her informant too -- she may be a married daughter.

This makes Blasterz wonder if Hyre made this tombstone for himself and his wife. He surely had the skills.

The tombstone reads as follows:

"Mrs. L & L. S.

HYER

1864 193 1854"
Date of Birth: 1854

Date of Death: 1945

Material: Stone
