The building was two stories and constructed of limestone with a stucco finish. In 1892 the county seat was moved to Hondo, TX. The vacant courthouse was sold to the County Board of Education in 1915.
The structure was altered greatly as part of a WPA project in 1939. The WPA work included the removal of the stucco, the addition of a stone double staircase to the front of the building to provide additional access to the second floor, and the addition of two one-story stone rooms on each of the building's shorter sides.
It was used as a school until 1961 when the city bought it. It is now the Castroville City Hall.
