This is the biggest glacial erratic found in Warsaw (30 tons). The erratic consists of biotite gneiss.

Glacial erratics (from Latin errare - to wander) are the big rock blocks that were moved by glaciers and left in the region where they significantly differ from the surrounding area. The Warsaw area consists mostly of tetriary sediments like sands and loam and has plain character. Gneiss is the metamorphic rock met in mountain areas. Therefore, gneiss rocks are easily identificable as having 'foreign' origin.
The one you stand near is the biggest glacial erratic found in Warsaw area. It weights 30 tons. It was found in 1938 on Podchorazy street and in 1959 it was place before the entrance to the Polish Geological Insitute. It consists of biotite gneiss. Biotite is a common phyllosilicate mineral within the mica group, with the approximate chemical formula K(Mg,Fe)3Al Si3 O10(F,OH)2.
