Dr Gemma Foster is married to property developer Simon and they have a son, Tom. They are living happily until one day Gemma finds a blond hair on Simon’s scarf. Initially she thinks Simon is having an affair with his assistant, Becky. However, Gemma uses a young patient, Carly, to follow Simon, in exchange for Dr Foster getting rid of Carly’s abusive boyfriend.
Eventually Gemma discovers that Simon’s mistress is Kate Parks, the daughter of a patient. Further, she finds out that Kate is pregnant. Gemma confronts Simon, who denies the affair. Simon’s elderly mother confirms the affair however. Gemma consults one of her patients, Anwar, who is a divorce lawyer. Anwar advises Gemma to investigate Simon’s love life and his financial affairs, whilst maintaining normality in her family life.
As part of her investigations Gemma gets Carly to befriend Kate. Gemma sleeps with Simon’s accountant and then blackmails him to reveal Simon’s financial secrets. Apparently one of Simon’s projects is losing money badly and is only being kept afloat by a mystery investor.
Gemma decides against divorce after Simon’s mother commits suicide to escape her terminal illness and pain. Kate has an abortion and Gemma and Simon seem to settle down. However Gemma’s life descends into turmoil after an internet troll, the accountant’s wife, accuses her of having a hand in her mother in law’s death. Carly’s boyfriend also creeps out of the woodwork and makes a complaint against Gemma. Gemma’s despair deepens when she discovers that Simon has resumed his affair.
Gemma sets out to embarrass Kate and makes a scene at a dinner party where she exposes Simon’s infidelity and that the mystery investor is Kate’s father. Kate’s father should not be an investor in the project due to a conflict of interest.
In the end Simon refuses to leave the marital home. Gemma loses control and abducts Tom. She returns to the house alone and distressed.
