Lake Champlain is as narrow as it gets here. It was constructed of locally quarried limestone. Surrounded by dry moats. Beehive ovens discovered by archaeologists could produce 900 loaves of bread/ day.
When the British occupied, the ovens were still usable.
It was the highest point on the west side. More than 3,000 people worked on its construction. The British used squared logs that rose 27 feet above the stone foundation. A chimney fire spread from the barracks to the powder magazine in 1773 that destroyed the fort.
It was reoccupied by the Americans from 1775-76, then recaptured by the British and held until 1783.
Walking tour maps are available. No inside remains.

Dennis Brown wrote a song detailing the history, copyrighted 1976.
The land was originally Iroquois and Algonquin natives.
The second fort was three times larger than the French one.
