This waymarked sign and building looks like it dates from about 1910. The sign reads as follows:
"CLEMENS-NORRED
DRY GOODS CO."
The store ceased operating in 1939.
From newspapers.com, an article from the Abilene Reporter-News from September 13, 1939 explains why this store was closed in Putnam: (

"PUTNAM,; Aug.31 (Spl) Mr. and Mrs. Fred Fanner and daughter, Gladys Lucile, left Putnam Wednesday for Iraan, where Farmer will become manager of a dry goods store. Farmer has been connected with the Clements-Norred dry goods at Putnam 14 years. He and Mrs. Fanner were prominent in church and local affairs. The Clement- Norred store was moved to Seagraves in the early spring of this year. Farmer has been at Seagraves and Iraan several weeks, maintaining his home in Putnam."
