The UNESCO sign is located at the entrance to the Rila Monastery and its English portion reads:
"Rila Monastery has been inscribed in 1983 upon the World Heritage List of the
Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage.
Inscription on this List confirms the exceptional universal value of the cultural site which deserves protection for the benefit of all humanity. Ria Monastery, founded in the 10th
century had played the role of important spiritual and educational centre. A
characteristic example of the Bulgarian Renaissance (18th-19th centuries), the
monument symbolizes the awareness of the Bulgarian cultural identity."
