Coxton Yards was constructed in 1870 by Asa Packer's Lehigh Valley Railroad focusing on a need to transport anthracite coal from northeastern Pennsylvania. The Coxton Hump Yard was closed in 1965. A little over 10 yards later Lehigh Valley Railroad became Consolidated Rail Corp. (Conrail). By 1996 Coxton Yard was all but abandoned, leaving all sort of locomotives and cars to sit and rot. Today the Reading & Northern Railroad operates the southern portion of the yard. Ronald M. Delevan, a locomotive rebuilder and scrapper is headquartered in Coxton's former diesel shop and remnants of its steam locomotive-era roundhouse.
