This route is the Old Sunbury Road, one of the longest vehicular thoroughfares of post-Revoultionary Georgia. It was laid out in the early 1790´s from Greensboro via Sparta and Swainsboro to the port of Sunbury on the Midway River. The long way was noted for its elevated course and small number of stream crossings. When Sunbury, which was once Georgia´s second port, declined in commercial importance the road lost arterial significance. Many stretches of the old route, however, continue in daily use.
