ABOUT THE RELIEF ART:

The relief art depicts Shakespeare wearing a button-up coat with a ruffed collar beneath it. At his waist, his right hand is crossed over his left hand, and he holds a feather quill in his right hand.

The following inscription is engraved below the relief art:

"Sagnet fortæller om en Kongesøn Amleth der levede i Jylland før vikinge tiden. Saxo nedskrev i Middelalderen hans saga. Shakespeare gendigtede i renaissancen Hamlets skæbne og knyttede den til dette slot. Han sikrede der ved den Danske prins evigt ry og bragte Helsingørs [????] over verden."

[ENGLISH TRANSLATION]

Legend tells of a prince Amleth who lived in Jutland before Viking times. Saxo wrote in the Middle Ages his saga. Shakespeare retold in Renaissance times, Hamlet's fate and attached it to this castle. He ensured the reputation of the Danish prince forever and brought Elsinore [????] over the world.

ABOUT THE CASTLE:

"Kronborg is a castle and stronghold in the town of Helsingør, Denmark. Immortalized as Elsinore in William Shakespeare's play Hamlet, Kronborg is one of the most important Renaissance castles in Northern Europe and has been added to UNESCO's World Heritage Sites list (2000).

Kronborg is known to many as "Elsinore," the setting of William Shakespeare's famous tragedy Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, though "Elsinore" is actually the anglicized name of the surrounding town of Helsingør. Hamlet was performed in the castle for the first time to mark the 200th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare, with a cast consisting of soldiers from the castle garrison. The stage was in the telegraph tower in the southwest corner of the castle. The play has since been performed several times in the courtyard and at various locations on the fortifications. Later performers to play Hamlet at the castle included Laurence Olivier, John Gielgud, Christopher Plummer, Derek Jacobi, and in 2009 Jude Law."
