Cascade River State Park includes more than 5000 acres of hilly terrain on Minnesota's North Shore. It is about halfway between Grand Portage and Split Rock Lighthouse State Parks, and also about a one-hour drive from George H. Crosby-Manitou State Park.
The park is available for hiking, geocaching, camping, and fishing year round. Electric hookups are not available in winter. Three-season primitive group camping is available. There are backpacking campsites.
The park office has a small gift shop. They sell firewood, and rent snowshoes. In the summer, they also sell ice.
Naturalist programs are offered occasionally during the summer.
The major attractions of Cascade River State Park are the picnic grounds on Lake Superior, near the CCC-built scenic overlook, and the miles of trails for hiking in summer and cross-country skiing in winter. The most popular trail is a short loop to view the cascades and the dramatic descent of the Cascade River to Lake Superior. The Superior Hiking Trail also goes through the park.
State park vehicle permits, good at any Minnesota state park, are $5 per day, or $25 per year.

Background:
The rugged landscape of this park was formed by volcanic activity, followed by glaciers which created Lake Superior. A Civilian Conservation Corps camp was at Cascade River in the 1930s.
