More than 900 persons are buried in the County Home Cemetery in Tallmadge, Ohio. The Summit County Home was a hospital, an elderly home, and it housed mentally challenged and poor people. It was in operation from 1919 to 1970, and eventually demolished in 1980. Many residents that lived here were indigent and when they died, they were buried in the County Home Cemetery. Others were buried here due to unfortunate reasons caused by the depression and difficult economic times. Many people were buried in common graves.
At one time, the graves were marked, but burial records were destroyed by a fire in 1981. The grounds began to be maintained by the County of Summit in 1975. In 2007, the Summit Metro Parks acquired the former county home property. The cemetery is now easily accessible off the Meadow Trail.
