The mark is cut into the stonwork of the Taverner John Miller's drinking fountain on the south side of Middleborough at the junction with North Hill. The fountain, now out of use, backs on to the Roman wall that surrounds Colchester.

The mark is in good condition but has weathered slightly and is easy to locate being on the right supporting pedestal of this Grade II listed fountain.

The inscription above the fountain's arch reads:

Presented by Taverner John Miller EsqRR MP
Opened August 27th 1864 J F Bishop EsqRR Mayor

As mentioned, the fountain is Grade II listed with the entry at the Historic England website telling us:

Dated 1864. Brick, with red granite pilasters and a Portland stone pediment. Basin missing.
