The Airport was intended to become the main eastern air gateway to Canada. When the decision was made to consolidate passenger traffic at one airport, Dorval was chosen, and Mirabel was relegated to the role of a cargo airport. Mirabel thus turned out to be a white elephant. Before 2013, it was the only Canadian airport being part of the National Airports System with no passengers operations.
Today, Montréal–Mirabel International Airport is home to Bombardier Aerospace (CRJ 700 and 900, CSeries) as well as many companies specialized in aircraft construction and maintenance (L3 MAS, Mecachrome, TurboMeca).
Several Courrier companies (Purolator, FedEx, etc.) also use the runway.
