Near Winter Harbor, within the Schoodic Peninsula portion of Acadia National Park, is this survey disk, PE1769, Schoodic Reset.
To get to the monument, from US1, turn south on Maine Route 186 through several towns, including Winter Harbor. In Winter Harbor, take a left (still Route 186) then, about 500 ft down, take a right at an intersection - follow the sign to Acadia National Park. Follow this road through the entrance (you may need to purchase a pass ahead of time at designated locations). Follow the road to a turnoff on the left for Schoodic Head. Follow this road and take the left at the fork up the slope to a parking area near the head summit. From here, walk up the trail, taking note the intersection signs (so you can go down the way you came up), to the mark by another intersection sign. The mark is embedded in the rock ledge, about four feet from the intersection sign.
The marker itself is a standard circular survey disk. The marker has the following text:
Near the edge:
"U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey - Triangulation Station"
Inside this text:
[The usual statement about disturbing the marker.]
Embossed:
"SCHOODIC - 1860"
Center:
[Triangle with a center punch]
The marker was in good condition.
The area around the disk is surrounded by trees higher than head height. The weather conditions at the time was heavy fog, so I cannot comment on how wide or far the view is. My guess that there are limited distance views.
I did not attempt to recover any of the reference points.
The following is from the 1971 recovery on the NGS Datasheet.
