The church itself is 1 1/2 story brick building with a gable roof and a wooden steeple. It is designed in the Greek Revival style. While the church is fairly typical in New England, it is the circumstances about how it became to be, the most interesting. The Congregational Church in Center Lovell was founded in the early 1800's and the parishioners attended services in the town hall. In 1841 Moses Heard, a member, moved to Georgia and transferred his membership to a church in that state. During his stay in Georgia he became a slave owners. Heard moved back to Lovell and wished to rejoin the church. A debate occurred over 6 meeting as to whether Heard should be allowed back in the church because of his slave ownership. This debate lead to the building of this church. It also lead to the building of another church in Center Lovell as well for the Congregationalists.
