The
Winding Stair Mountains are an east-west range of hills within the Ouachita Mountains. President Ronald Reagan designated the Winding Stair Mountains National Recreation Area in 1988. The
Talimena National Scenic Byway starts right next to this Visitor Information Center on OK-1, which junctions off of US-271. The
byway continues east on OK-1 and into Arkansas, where it acquires the route designation AR-88.
This Visitor Information Center was set up to provide tourist information for things along the route. If you are traveling west to east, stop at this Visitor Information Center first to get a good orientation and pick up information on the sites and businesses you are about to encounter. If you were traveling east to west, stop in to take a break and reflect.
NOTE: When we were here the restrooms were closed, and not because it was the wrong hour. Probably some work being done to them?
