Colchester has a series of "you are here" maps to help the visitor and locals to find their way around the town. The maps are part of a black post that stands about 2.5 metres in height with a map and other information on each side of the post. At the top of the post is the name of the area in which the map is located and above that a colour so, for example, the area may be "Trinity" and the corresponding colour for Trinity is lilac. Below the area name is a list of nearby places with arrows indicating roughly in which direction they lie, either ahead, left or right. Some places, car parks for example, have a symbol next to the name.
The map is beneath all the places. It is about A3 size, landscape mode and in colour. Down the righthand side of the map is a legend with the "You Are Here" reversed out in a black box. A line leads from the box to the point on the map where the observer is located which is indicated by a black circle. Beneath the "you are here" wording is the name of the location.
The legend/key shows symbols for the following:
- Toilets
- Toilets with disabled facilities
- Car Parks
- Parking for people with disabilities
- Cycle parking
- Coach parking
- Bus and taxi only routes
- The Roman wall
- Pedestrian routes
- One way streets
- National cycle network
There is also a scale bar and a north indicator - north being orientated head-up, that is to the top of the map.
The town appears to be broken into six areas that are labeled and each has a unique colour. They are:
- St Mary's (blue)
- Dutch Quarter (orange)
- Castle Park (green)
- St John's (red)
- St Botolph's Quarter (yellow)
- Trinity (lilac)
In and around the central area, Trinity, the main streets are shown and named. Main vehicular routes, that do not pass through the central area are indicated with a thin blue line. Park areas are coloured green and the River Colne is shown in blue.
